Review: Bones to Ashes

Bones to Ashes (Temperance Brennan, #10) Bones to Ashes by Kathy Reichs

My rating: 3 of 5 stars
This was my first introduction to the written character Temperance Brennan created by Kathy Reichs. Though I have a profound interest in the “Bones” show, it took some time to get into this story.
Dissappointment may be clouding my review here so please bear this in mind further on. They have very loosly created that show with some bases to the book.
That being said:
I will be attempting to read the first book of this story at a later time because I do see much promise in the series I do hope that there is more to the Canadian translations. By that I mean being a dumb American I had a hard time understanding what the infrastructure was are they like FBI or a National Police Force, or state enforcement, do they have states and do they differ.
Most of the organizations where in French and I speak English even a small translation at the back might have been nice. I also noticed that French has very little reference points for the English language making it even harder to translate or guess.
The story itself was very enjoyable once I got over the fact that this story was the Bones and Booth of the show and more involved with the life of Tempe. Like I said it has made me interested enough to go back an start at the beginning to see if I like the story as a whole.

Just thinking!?

Posted by Blackberry On August - 27 - 2009

I was just considering the concept of hurry up and wait. Seems to me that when I have an appointment that appointment is never on time.
People don’t plan there days efficiently, and have no courtesy for those meeting with them. It is very disrespectful to think that you are that much more important than those, there to see you. Like we have nothing better to do than sit and wait for you.
I for one am tired of waiting patiently by while you jerk yourself off. And for what purpose am I waiting for you, so you can take my money, so you can smile and apologize for taking to long. Ney nay
I am done with the hurry up and wait. It is time they start waiting for us. Join me won’t you___

Review – BtVS: Uninvited Guests

Posted by Steve On August - 26 - 2009

Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Uninvited Guests (Buffy the Vampire Slayer Comic #12 Buffy Season 3) Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Uninvited Guests by Andi Watson

My rating: 3 of 5 stars
Another cheap find at the Raleigh used book shop. When you see them gotta grab them up.(Note: They have very little organization to the graphic novels in my opinion, but they do have a section for them) This is not an official version of the Buffy story though it takes place in the time line so to speak. I remember thinking she never did that. This was not in my knowledge base when I first started reading Buffy comics. I was unaware that the older comic series was not in step wholly with the television series. Now you know!

This was however a great story done in the comic it doesn’t have true lasting effect to the overall storyline. The artist does a great job in depicting the real life characters. So you won’t have a problem following who is who. The characters are also written in my opinion right on with the scripted characters.

I was looking for more BtVS and this is definitely made for those looking for more Buffy the Vampire Slayer and her faithful slayerettes. Go out and find it if you can. If you can’t find this I am sure that this is in one of the eight Omnibus novels in most book shops and comic stores.

P.S. Don’t confuse this with the Buffy Comics Season 8 which is how the creator wanted the story to go. That is also a very Goodread…

Review: The Lake House

Posted by Steve On August - 25 - 2009

The Lake House The Lake House by James Patterson

My rating: 4 of 5 stars
This is one of my favorite stories by Mr. Patterson. In this exciting sequel to “When the Wind Blows” we are reintroduced to Max, Oz, Ic, Peter, Wendy and Matthew the famous bird children from The School. It was with out a doubt a page turner for me and anyone that enjoyed the first story will undoubtedly enjoy this one as well.

Review: Battlefield Earth

Battlefield Earth Battlefield Earth by L. Ron Hubbard

My rating: 3 of 5 stars
This story seemed a little long winded but at the end of every turning point I was so enthralled that I needed it to go on.
This was my first and probably only Hubbard Book but I enjoyed it immensely.

Review: Dawn Vol. 1

Posted by Steve On August - 23 - 2009

Dawn Volume 1: Lucifer's Halo (Diamond Comics) Dawn Volume 1: Lucifer’s Halo by Joseph Michael Linsner

My rating: 4 of 5 stars
I found this and its companion at in a used book shop in Raleigh, while applying for a job. It was in good condition, being a fourth printing I would hope so. No I didn’t get the job. This is a little late in writing, sorry.
First off Mr. Linsner’s art is Incredible. It is real, dark, and emotive. This would have been worth full price just to look at. I am not a critic, when it comes to art, but I know when I see a Good bit of it. This is not for children in my opinion. The authors website is here.

In his forward the author states that this trade paperback has been slightly rewritten to more accurately tell the story he intended. So if you read the original comics this might be worth checking out. The story is intelligently written and appears to be well versed in the principals of Goddess worship. It is a thinking read if you want blood and guts without intentions don’t bother.

This is a definite must read. I would recommend it to any graphic novel enthusiast who wants more than just great art. it is great art.

Today is gonna be good

Posted by Steve On August - 17 - 2009

Has to be once a week I just can’t sleep these days like my mind won’t shut down.  I just get something in there and it starts rolling around rattling to the point my teeth start to chatter.  Then I climb myself back out of the bed sit here at the computer smoke my cigarettes, drink my coffee, and hash it out in my own time.  Like right now writing this blog post.  Which I swear I’m gonna do more of.  So I think I finally came up with a good idea but I still need to work it out some.

On an unrelated note I am still not happy with this theme on the site.  I tried to make a few changes and it turns out the guy who wrote the code was like uber copyright nutter.  He encrypted the footer of the code so you can’t change it and worse yet it links to bad url’s so I can’t even contact him about it.  I just want to change copyright this site to creative commons.  With the little picture.  Maybe change his link to something not a parked page.  If there is any help please let me know.

So the time has come to say goodbye to all are company…

A Memorial Tribute to Sam

Posted by Steve On August - 17 - 2009

Sam was getting up in the years fifteen ya’ know.  His ever slighter frame and weakening of age prevented him from going down stairs, so we had been taking him out the front door.  Most of the time he would take care of business and come in.  Occasionally he would get it in his head that there was an adventure just round the corner or down the driveway.

Two weeks ago he made a decision that his mother couldn’t make it was his time.  Getting weaker the other dogs taking challenging his authority he had to take that last adventure.  Ever the accommodating friend he was till the very end.

This is a tribute video to a long time companion and great friend. He is on the last great adventure.

Being Human

Posted by Steve On August - 15 - 2009

The Plot: Three twenty-somethings a werewolf George, a vampire Mitchell and a ghost Annie.  They struggle to live normal lives, despite their strange and dark secrets. Think Friends (more like Coupling really) mixed with She Wolf of London and Forever Knight.  Except he seems to be able to go out in the sun.

George and Mitchell work as orderlies in a hospital in England. They try to live a normal life in hopes no one will notice their dark secrets. They move into a house, only to find that Annie, killed in mysterious circumstances, haunts it.

But with unwelcome intruders into their world, a threatened revolution from the vampire underworld, constant threats of exposure, and the day-to-day issues faced by young people – the only thing they may be able to rely on is each other.

Warning May Contain Spoilers

So Far:  We have three episodes under our belt in the States and so far so good.  Mitchell has eaten a couple friends.  George has destroyed the apartment during his time of the month. Also, his creator has found him only to be a real shit.  Annie on the other hand was predictably killed by her fiancee, though she didn’t remember this at first.  This is a comedy, drama, horror type show though the last has yet to be really shown.  Unless you consider the blood.

It is rather funny and there is a lot to learn about these three characters especially Mitchell.  Being he has been a vampire for many years already.  One must ask why give it all up.  Though our werewolf friend seems to be shy and nervous there is that beast inside him that could change everything.  Why does Annie still stick around especially after seeing her new ghost mate check out. How is it that her mascara always seems to run? Why doesn’t anyone see her carry things on the street? Just have to wait till the next episode.

Overall I am liking this show and invite others to check it out as well.  It is good for a laugh and it will overall keep you guessing.

New episodes air Saturdays @  9PM on BBC America check your local listings.beinghuman
